Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order.
These beautiful statues of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel are important to our faith. With this apparition of Mary she tells us through her conversation with Simon “This [scapular] a shield in times of danger; a pledge of special peace and protection.” The Carmelite Order traces its roots back to Elijah (the Old Testament prophet) who challenged the false prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel! For centuries that mountain was an area where hermits went to pray. In 1251, St. Simon Stock was a leader in the Carmelite Order and was in prayer when the Virgin Mary appeared to him with the brown scapular. The mantle she held out was similar to what she wore.
